For over 86 years, Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute has provided the highest quality care to seniors living in Northern New Jersey. Expanding and changing with the communities we serve, we have grown from a simple home for the aged and orphans to a complete senior care campus, offering a continuum of services designed to meet your needs. Come explore our skilled nursing facility, dementia care pavilion, subacute care institute, apartments with supportive services and adult day center to discover how under one name and in one place we provide an entire world of elder care.
Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute sits perched atop the rolling hills of Northern New Jersey on 13 acres of beautiful, park-like grounds. Located in the suburban town of Clifton, New Jersey the Center is a state-of-the-art long-term care and subacute care facility providing broad-based services to Jewish seniors. Dedicated to providing the highest quality care, the Center has far exceeded a stereotypical nursing home by offering a continuum of care environment, making us a leader in Jewish eldercare.
Divisions include a skilled nursing facility, a subacute care wing, a dementia/Alzheimer’s care pavilion, a rehabilitation program, a medical adult day center with a dementia day care program, a sheltered workshop, hospice care, a respite care program, and senior apartments with supportive programs. Daughters of Miriam Center offers a glatt kosher kitchen with dietary staff carefully monitoring meals prepared for specialized diets. Whatever level of services you or your loved one may need, from independent living to residential care, Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute can help.
Founded in 1921 as a Jewish home for the aged and orphans, the Center is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and serves as a university-affiliated teaching center. Funded privately and by government sources, the Center participates in Medicare, Medicaid and several managed care programs. The Center is the only Jewish facility in New Jersey accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). We proudly display the JCAHO gold seal to demonstrate our commitment to the elderly as we voluntarily seek accreditation from the Joint Commission, a national accrediting body whose standards exceed state and federal requirements.
Activities
Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute emphasizes an activities-based care model. Programs are driven by individual needs and the interests of the residents and are designed to provide emotional, physical, cognitive, creative and spiritual stimulation.
Adult Medical Day Care Center
The Rita and Samuel Brodie Adult Medical Day Center located on the campus of Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute offers two distinct day programs for seniors living in the community. Both the main day center program and the specialized day program for Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders are designed to offer families and clients alternatives which allow them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible while meeting the specific needs of these two distinct groups.
Alzheimer's/Dementia Care
Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute offers inpatient and outpatient care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The Dementia Care Pavilion, located in the skilled nursing facility, provides in-house care while the Rita and Samuel Brodie Adult Medical Day Center provides out-patient services through its specialized day program for Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
Food Services
Sodexho Services is responsible for the management of our food service department in the skilled nursing facility, while Unidine Dining Services provides meals for the tenants of Miriam Apartments I and II. In both cases, the chef, dietitian, executive chef and purchasing manager plan all meals served to nursing home residents, subacute patients, apartment tenants and day center clients.
The Gallen Institute
The Gallen Institute for Subacute Care is a 38-bed multi-level nursing and subacute care wing designed for the patient who requires rehabilitative or medically-complex services. The state-of-the-art program is a cost effective alternative to an extended hospital stay or when the patient is not yet ready to return home.
Hospice Care
For those suffering from terminal illnesses, Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute provides hospice care in partnership with Hospice of New Jersey. A comprehensive plan of care is created, focused on easing the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that often accompanies a terminal illness, while making no attempt to hasten death or prolong life.
Medical Care
Daughters of Miriam Center/The Galllen Institute provides round the clock medical care in the skilled nursing facility. A physician is on-site daily and on-call in the evenings to insure that residents’ medical conditions are closely monitored. In conjunction with other departments, the Medical Services Department formulates and implements a comprehensive treatment plan for each resident.
Nursing Care
Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nurse aides work round the clock caring for residents in the center's skilled nursing facility. They are the primary providers of care, implementing the plan designed for each resident by an interdisciplinary team comprised of a physician, nurse, rehabilitation therapist, dietician, social worker and activity therapist.
Pastoral Care
Jewish religious observance is an important aspect of life at Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute. A full-time Rabbi conducts pastoral visitations for long-term care residents and apartment tenants and serves as the masgiach for the glatt kosher kitchen.
Rehabilitation Medicine
The Helen Geller Deich Department of Rehabilitation Medicine serves to restore residents to their highest level of function through physical therapy, occupational and speech therapies and rehabilitation medicine. A physiatrist, a physician trained in the field of rehabilitation medicine, supervises the delivery of care and prescribes the necessary therapy programs to help residents maintain independence and teach them pain management.
Respite Care
The Respite "Intermission" Program provides temporary residential care for frail elderly persons who live in the community. Skilled nursing care is provided for a period of one to six weeks in the long-term care facility. Program participants must have a stable home situation to which they can return.
Sheltered Workshop
The Fred Ables Memorial Sheltered Workshop is an innovative work program that helps keep long-term care residents, day program clients and apartment tenants active and feeling productive. For many seniors, isolation and idleness can lead to feelings of depression. By contrast, participants of the Fred Ables Sheltered Workshop find themselves in a social environment, working to finish jobs for area industries. With a paycheck to show for their efforts, they know that their skills are valued and take great pride in their work.
Social Services
The Social Service staff offers ongoing support and assistance to provide for the emotional well-being and concrete needs of all residents admitted to Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute. Social workers provide guidance and counseling for residents and their families to ease the adjustment into a new way of living and to insure the highest quality of life for all those in our facility.
