Huntington's Disease
Huntington’s Disease, also referred to as Huntington’s Chorea, is a genetic disorder affecting an estimated 25,000 U.S. residents. The disorder causes jerky, twisting and uncontrollable movements and the slow loss of physical control and thought processing.
Due to the serious nature of the disease, quality of care is essential. When at-home care is no longer an option, the Huntington’s Disease Unit brings both comfort and peace of mind for the patient and caregivers.
The Huntington’s Disease Unit at Cedar Brook is the only specialized unit in New Jersey. Indeed, it is one of only six centers in the country to provide care uniquely tailored to the needs of individuals with Huntington’s Disease.
Our expertise enables us to focus on the disease process and what can be done to increase the patient’s quality of life. Health care team members specially trained in Huntington’s Disease patient care include:
Board-certified medical director
Consulting neurologists
Psychiatrist
Psychologist
Registered nurses
Speech, hearing, physical, occupational and recreation therapists
Social worker
Registered dietitian
Huntington’s residents require very specific care and assistance with tasks of daily living – tasks that other facilities simply haven’t the time or staff to assist with. Our team focuses on rehabilitating patients’ body, mind and spirit. We assist the patient’s loved ones, as well.
Because we are a specialized unit with highly individualized care and support, we can limit drug therapy to an absolute minimum. This is important because medications can be debilitating.
Until there’s a cure, there’s the Huntington’s Disease Unit at Cedar Brook. We look forward to serving you or your loved one.
