About Us

Yesterday...
A Heritage of Care for the Elderly
Our tradition of care began in 1916 when a group of dedicated, local Jewish businessmen opened the Hebrew Sheltering Home of Atlantic City. Their charitable efforts helped provide meals and temporary housing for the poor in a small home on Columbia Place in Atlantic City. Needs soon outgrew the shelter and its founders opened the Hebrew Old Age Home of Atlantic City in 1923.

By 1928, still larger quarters were needed for the Home. Through the hard work and perseverance of a local rabbi and Jewish community members, the Hebrew Old Age and Sheltering Home of Atlantic City was opened in 1934. The new Home featured dormitory style accommodations and services for 20 people.

Over the years, the services became focused on providing residential care for the elderly. The demand for service continued to grow while space remained limited. The Hebrew Old Age Center purchased the former Cosmopolitan Club Hotel on Atlantic Avenue and began offering services at this location in 1951. In the 1970’s, the organization started trading as Seashore Gardens and as a licensed Home for the Aged offering skilled nursing care in a 151-bed facility. In 1987, the Cosmopolitan Retirement Residence opened providing residential care in a 70-bed residence, at the same location with services for seniors capable of more independent living.

Today...
Carrying On Our Tradition
Guided by Jewish tradition, Seashore Gardens welcomes people of all races, religions and creed. We strive to create an atmosphere that is homelike, safe, comfortable and enhances the quality of life for residents by promoting dignity and self-respect.

In 1996, the Board of Directors continued the tradition of its forefathers by reaffirming their commitment to care for the elderly and elected to create a modern, economically efficient facility in a more residential setting that would offer state-of-the art services for years to come. In 2002, Seashore Gardens relocated to Galloway Township, approximately 12 miles inland from Atlantic City, to a beautiful picturesque setting, to position itself to meet evolving community needs. Named the Simon and Sylvia Zisman Seashore Gardens Living Center, the new Living Center strives to set the standard in senior living. It includes the Eva Stone Health Care Center, the Louis Edelstein Assisted Living Residence and the Comfort Care Alzheimer’s Residence all under one roof.

Unique to this area the Living Center features an "Atlantic City boardwalk" theme and 1930’s-40’s décor with a café, gift shop, aviary, beauty salon, children’s play area, wheelchair accessible 4-Hole Putting Green and senior fitness center. The Center has received statewide recognition for its innovative programs and national media coverage regarding its unique boardwalk design.
