Helping Our Patients Return to a Full & Active Life
We are a private, not-for-profit hospital sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton, dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our patients. While we are receptive to changes in our community and the healthcare environment, our goal has always been and continues to be providing excellence in rehabilitative services.
St.Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, a non-profit facility sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton, is committed to maximizing the quality of human life by providing comprehensive physical rehabilitation and related programs to meet the healthcare needs of our communities.
Value oriented, person centered, fiscally responsible, and dedicated to excellence, the Center creates a supportive environment which fosters human dignity. The integral element of this process is a caring professional staff working with patients and families toward a common goal.
Through a holistic approach to quality care, all services are intended to contribute to the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well being of all persons being served.
Physical Therapy
Patients receiving inpatient physical therapy at SLRC have many different medical circumstances – from joint replacement surgeries to fractures, from strokes to brain injuries. In all cases the goal of SLRC doctors and physical therapists is the same – helping patients regain their independence.
After the patient is seen by a doctor, he or she is evaluated by different therapists in areas that are specific to his or her injury. Treatment is received using state-of-the-art equipment from certified therapists who are trained in the most recent technologies available in the medical community. When patients are physically able, they will often receive up to three hours of therapy each day.
SLRC strives to differentiate itself in the industry with its dedication to continuity of care. Patients and their families will always work with the same team, not a group of revolving doctors who have to relearn case specifics every time they see you. When questions arise, you’ll know which expert to consult with to get the answer you are looking for.
As the patient prepares to make the transition from SLRC to home, the therapy team focuses on both the mental and physical aspects of recovery. This includes doing their best to educate the patient and his or her extended family on any challenges that should be expected as well as ordering appropriate equipment as needed. SLRC’s years of experience in dealing with insurance companies helps to make the experience as trouble-free as possible for everyone involved.
Speech Therapy
Inpatient speech therapy patients come to SLRC with many different circumstances, so offering patients highly individualized rehabilitative care is a priority. After undergoing a complete diagnostic assessment, each patient begins a program that includes work in the areas of verbal expression, comprehension, memory, reading, writing and orientation. Treatment plans take into account each patients’ prior level of interest and function together with current concerns, and goals are discussed with the patient and family members.
Since swallowing skills are so often affected along with speech, SLRC has developed a comprehensive dietary program that takes the patient through each stage of recovery. Whether the patient is only able to tolerate thickened liquids or is further along in the healing process, SLRC is there for support. The safety of the patient is of the utmost importance, and SLRC caregivers educate the extended family of the patient to help provide a seamless transition to home or outpatient therapy.
For those with swallowing dysfunction, SLRC has speech and language pathologists who are certified in VitalStim Therapy, which is used to improve swallowing through the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The VitalStim device is the only device currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of swallowing dysfunction.
In addition to its personalized care and state-of-the-art technology, SLRC prides itself on creating an atmosphere of support for the patient and his or her extended family. Training and education is given to the family so that concepts that have been worked on in therapy can be reinforced at home after discharge. Patients and their families also receive training in how to deal with swallowing dysfunction, along with the special dietary requirements that accompany these disorders.
Occupational Therapy
The Inpatient Occupational Therapy program at SLRC is dedicated to promoting life long health and well-being through engagement in "Activities of Daily Living". Activities of Daily Living include leisure, work, self care, and home management. Our staff works with a variety of adults with different medical conditions. These conditions may be orthopedic, neurological, cognitive, and/or visual deficits. Patients are provided with meaningful activities such as self care tasks, homemaking or other occupations where the patients learn new strategies, techniques or adaptations to achieve maximal independence. For continued care, some patients may benefit from outpatient services.
