A Brief History of The Evergreens®
In 1919, The Evergreens® was founded in Bound Brook, NJ as a generous gift to the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey by the Henry LaMonte family. We were established on a tradition we continue to honor: a commitment to provide older adults with the support, dignity and security of a residential health facility.
When The Evergreens® moved to Moorestown, we expanded services to include long-term nursing care. Now known as Matthews Hall, the magnificent red brick main building at the center of our campus was originally built in the 1920s as the home of the Johnson family, founders of the Victor Talking Machine Company. In 1949 this stately residence became the new architectural centerpiece of The Evergreens®.
In 1994, our tradition of caring moved to yet another logical level of growth, as we became a continuing care retirement community, offering active older adults an independent lifestyle. It is within the rich context of this tradition of caring that we offer our services to residents.
The Evergreens® Campus With its blend of the traditional and modern, privacy and community -- The Evergreens® is architecturally distinctive, yet reflective of resident needs. For example, all three sections - Independent Living, the Van Duzer Pavilion and the Bishop Banyard Health Care Center - are accessible through indoor hallways. Our gracious lifestyle is supported by many conveniences and practicalities, including: Housekeeping Full-service bank On-site health clinic Grounds maintenance Scheduled transportation Beauty and barber shop Chapel For safety and peace of mind, we have a state-of-the-art, 24-hour emergency response system. Residents can summon security or health staff by phone, by emergency call buttons in their apartments or by portable radio call buttons.
Our Town The Evergreens® is located in historic Moorestown, a Revolutionary-era haven of prestige and congeniality. Moorestown's convenient location and charming small-town setting offer a life that's full of choices. Venture into the historic Main Street district for an afternoon of shopping or an evening concert at the Perkins Center for the Arts. For even more dining, entertainment, recreation and cultural activities, you're just 15 miles away from Philadelphia, with easy access to Atlantic City and New York City.

You Can Make a Difference in Our Community... Resident Associations are an integral part of The Evergreens® life. Through effective communication with administration and fellow residents, the Associations help shape a superior living experience. In addition, many residents are involved in other Evergreens-related endeavors, such as conducting tours, hosting prospective residents, assisting in the Marketing Department and serving on various committees such as activities and dining.
...And Outside Our Community... Many residents participate in volunteer activities ranging from cultural institutions, hospital groups, and civic and service societies such as Rotary Club and YMCA. We provide opportunities for residents to vote in local, state and national elections, as The Evergreens® is a recognized polling location.
The Evergreens' Bishop Banyard Health Care Center provides total nursing care, with staff available 24 hours a day. Bright and modern, the 60-bed Bishop Banyard Health Care Center includes single and double rooms - all spacious and tastefully appointed with homelike furnishings.
While residents have the option of continuing care with their own personal physicians, treatment in the Bishop Banyard Health Care Center is overseen by Elisabeth Siegert, MD, Medical Director of The Evergreens®. Dr. Siegert received her medical degree from Rutgers University and continued her training with a post-doctoral fellowship in geriatric medicine at Duke University Medical School. She is currently on the faculty of a major regional teaching hospital.
In addition to round-the-clock nursing care, a full range of supportive rehabilitation therapies are available, including physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and aquatic therapy. Activities for Bishop Banyard Health Care Center residents include arts and crafts, entertainment and movie nights, pet therapy and music therapy. The net effect is to minimize the resident's role as "patient" and maximize the resident's role as a person who is part of the total community environment. We pride ourselves on effectively applying this approach with residents whose needs vary - from residents whose needs are few to residents whose needs are very intensive, such as people who have tracheotomies, slow healing wounds, ostomies or feeding tubes.
The Evergreens® admits individuals into the Bishop Banyard Health Care Center from our resident population as well as outside referrals.
Two dining rooms serve Bishop Banyard Health Care Center residents. Under the direction of a certified geriatric dietitian, our dining services department serves attractive, tasty, and wholesome meals.
